Our vision for a new regional
Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
In response, the Friends of the Gengras Planetarium was formed to maintain a historical archive and study the feasibility of building a new regional Planetarium and Museum focused on Astronomy, with an emphasis on Planetary and Space Exploration.
Today, we are pleased to share highlights from the comprehensive plan. We also encourage you to comment on the concept using the feedback form provided. Further, you can sign up for project updates delivered directly to your email inbox.
Foucault pendulum
The centerpiece of the main lobby atrium will be an imposing 6-story-tall by 20-foot-diameter pendulum that demonstrates the Earth’s daily rotation around its axis.
Celestial sphere
This one-of-a-kind spherical theater displays astronomical objects and is capable of rendering simulations of our solar system and beyond through computer-generated imagery.
Exhibition galleries
Fully immersive themed galleries will provide guests with an out-of-this-world experience as they explore the rigors of working in space and living on alien worlds.
Assembly hall
Our learning resource theater will feature stadium seating, a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling microLED video display, fully immersive sound, and support for live podcasts.
Food for thought
Our on-site bistro will offer a variety of family-friendly fare. Food stations feature classic dishes from around the world including Asian, German, Greek, Italian, and Mexican cuisines.
A walk in the park
Located in a park setting, outdoor attractions will include topiary gardens, water features, a sundial, an astronomers monument, and an amphitheater for live performances.
Explorer workshops for all ages
For the inquisitive, we will offer a variety of after-school, evening, and weekend science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) sessions and events geared toward kids and their families. Here is just a sample.
Robotics
Participants will determine the use, design, construction, operation, and performance, of robotic vehicles intended for space exploration.
Model rocketry
Launching model rockets will enable participants to experience the challenges of aerodynamics and the balancing act between weight, fuel, and thrust.
Into the lens
Viewing the night sky through a telescope, participants will gain a deeper understanding of our place in the universe and its wonders.

Our vision for a new regional
Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
In September 2022, the West Hartford-based Children’s Museum relocated, resulting in the permanent closure of the Travelers Science Dome and the Gengras Planetarium.
